frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Tape-In and Hand-Tied extensions?
Tape-In Extensions: tape hair extensions are thin, lightweight extensions applied by sandwiching small sections of your natural hair between two adhesive wefts. They are quick to apply and ideal for adding volume and length for fine or thinning hair.
Hand-Tied Extensions: These involve sewing hair wefts onto a beaded base row attached to your hair. They offer a more natural look and are less detectable, perfect for fullness and length. Hand-tied extensions require more time to apply but provide a seamless integration with your natural hair.
Can I swim or exercise with my hair extensions?
Yes, you can swim and exercise with hair extensions, but it’s important to take precautions. Before swimming, wet your hair with clean water and apply a leave-in conditioner to prevent chlorine or saltwater absorption. Tie your hair up to avoid tangling. After swimming, wash and condition your hair promptly. When exercising, wear your hair in a loose ponytail or braid to minimize tangling and sweating at the bonds.
How are hair extensions removed, and is it damaging to my natural hair?
Hair extensions are professionally removed using specialized tools and techniques that do not damage your natural hair. For Tape-In extensions, a solvent is applied to loosen the adhesive, while for Hand-Tied or other beaded extensions, the beads are carefully opened and slid out. Proper removal is crucial to prevent damage to your natural hair.
Can I reuse my hair extensions after they are removed?
Yes, high-quality human hair extensions can be reused if they are well-maintained. The lifespan of the extensions depends on how well you care for them, including regular maintenance and gentle styling. Typically they can last 6-12 months depending on care.
How do I choose the right color and texture for my hair extensions?
Choosing the right color and texture involves a detailed consultation with your stylist. They will match the extensions to your natural hair color and texture, ensuring a seamless blend. Custom coloring can also be done for a perfect match.
Is there a minimum hair length required for applying hair extensions?
Generally, your natural hair should be at least touching your shoulders for hair extensions to be applied effectively and to look natural. As a general rule, you can typically double the length of your own hair with extensions.
How do I prevent tangling and matting of my hair extensions?
To prevent tangling and matting, brush your hair extensions 2-3 times a day with a soft bristle brush or a special extension brush. Start from the ends and work your way up to the roots gently. Avoid sleeping with wet hair, and consider wearing a silk cap or using a silk pillowcase to minimize friction.
Are there any specific hair care products I should use or avoid with extensions?
Avoid products containing sulfates, alcohol, and parabens, as they can dry out the extensions and weaken the bonds. Use sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners, and avoid applying conditioner directly on the bonds. Use heat protectant sprays before using heat-styling tools.
Can hair extensions help add length and volume to thinning hair?
Yes, hair extensions are an excellent solution for adding volume to thinning hair. They provide immediate fullness and body, enhancing the overall appearance. However, it’s essential to choose the right type of extensions and have them professionally applied to prevent any strain on your natural hair.
What are the signs that I need to replace my hair extensions?
Signs that you need to replace your hair extensions include noticeable matting or tangling, bonds or tapes becoming visible or slipping and excessive shedding. Regular maintenance can extend their lifespan, but typically, extensions need replacing every 6 -12 months.
Can I sleep comfortably with hair extensions, and are there any special considerations for nighttime care?
Yes, you can sleep comfortably with hair extensions. It’s advisable to loosely braid your hair or tie it in a soft ponytail to prevent tangling. Use a silk or satin pillowcase to reduce friction. Avoid going to bed with wet extensions to prevent matting and damage.
How do I care for my hair extensions at home?
To maintain the health and longevity of your hair extensions, use sulfate-free hair care products, gently brush your hair daily with a soft bristle brush, and avoid tangling. When washing, use a gentle shampoo and conditioner, avoiding direct application to the attachment points. Always dry your hair thoroughly, especially at the roots, and use heat protectant sprays before styling with heat tools.
Can hair extensions be colored or highlighted?
Yes, extensions made of real human hair can be colored or toned down. Typically we only recommend coloring down one shade to avoid excessive fading. Extensions can not be lightened. It’s recommended to have this done professionally to ensure the integrity of the extensions is maintained. Keep in mind that frequent color treatments can shorten the lifespan of your extensions.
Are hair extensions suitable for all hair types?
Hair extensions can be suitable for most hair types, including thin, thick, straight, or curly hair. However, the condition of your natural hair and your daily routine can influence the best type of extension for you. A professional consultation is essential to assess your hair and determine the most suitable extension method.
